Dr. Eric Stocker, M.D., F.A.C.C., the newest member of Matol’s Health and Nutrition Board, is a certified specialist in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease. For many years, Dr. Stocker has been helping his patients by advising them to take small, manageable steps towards a healthier lifestyle. He was concerned about the reactions and aversion some of his patients had to prescription drugs. He is using
what he has learned in his years of seeing people struggle with weight and cholesterol and combining that with the extensive research he has done into obesity, diet, and exercise.
Cholesterol, which is consumed, enters the intestine, is absorbed, and eventually makes its way to the liver. Plant sterols are structurally similar to cholesterol, so they compete with cholesterol for absorption by the cells lining the intestinal wall. This competition leads to less cholesterol being absorbed, and over time, a reduction in blood cholesterol levels.

Natural plant sterols are one of the proven methods of dietary cholesterol reduction that are accepted by national experts and organizations such as the National Cholesterol Education Program and the American Dietetic Association.
